“We are all capable of creative thinking. It’s just that artists, in whatever field, are the ones who perceive the initial sparks and fragments, and process them into something.” ~ Djamila Knopf
I’ve recently been exploring Djamila Knopf’s second artbook, Luminescence (which is absolutely STUNNING and you NEED IT on your bookshelf.) When I came across this paragraph in the “Ideas and Creativity” section, I immediately grabbed my journal to jot it down.
Everyone is capable of being creative. And I truly believe that anyone who says they aren’t has made the choice NOT to be creative. We might not be capable of EVERY form of creativity, but each of us is capable of SOME form of creativity. Maybe you can’t draw to save your life, but you can bake the most delicious chocolate chip cookies. Maybe you love painting, but can’t carry a tune. You ARE capable of creativity. But you have to CHOOSE to pursue it.
I do want to touch on a bit of a polarizing topic here. I believe talent exists. I believe some people are born with an innate gifting for something. Some people are born to be composers or poets, oil painters or photographers. The pull to create is too strong for them to ignore. They feel as though they must make something or they will cease to exist. But still, they have a choice: create or don’t create.
Whether you have some uncanny talent for something or you simply enjoy the process of being creative, I want to encourage you to CHOOSE CREATIVITY. CHOOSE to be an artist. Choose to take hold of those sparks and fragments and make something.
