I’ve been teaching art for just over a year on Patreon, and I’ve learned a few things along the way (and I’ll be sharing those things in greater depth in my next YouTube video, so stay tuned for that!) But one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is: what works for one person does not always work for another.

So, for the March quest exploring this cozy little gouache birdhouse vignette, I decided to switch things up a bit. I typically create a PDF with information, visual breakdowns, and assignments for the quest, and I still did all that with this one. But because this quest is a painting tutorial rather than I dive into a particular subject, the writing process was a bit trickier. I was trying to explain each part of the painting process. How much water is on my brush for this mix, how I swirled my brush to blend these two areas together... Some of these techniques are hard enough to write about anyways, but for people like me who learn better by WATCHING someone do something, a video was going to be much more helpful for them. So, I edited a full 1.5 hour video of the sketching and painting footage. Because, while some people in the group may prefer the written curriculum, others may understand it best simply by watching me do it myself.
So, whether you learn best by reading or by watching, if you’d like to learn how to paint this cozy little illustration, head on over to Patreon to join us for this month’s quest!
