Last week we chatted about 3 reasons why I’ve been facing so much resistance in my sketchbook practice. I’m happy to say that I’m slowly but steadily getting back into it and overcoming the resistance! Oftentimes I place too much pressure on my sketchbook to be a place of “pretty art”, instead of a place of exploration and discovery. I call this one my “Messy Sketchbook” for a reason, because it’s where I brainstorm and sketch whatever random, interesting things come to mind. It’s not a gallery of finely tuned pieces, but a book of unedited thoughts and ideas. It’s not meant to be wonderful; it’s just meant to be for me.

I recently had an itch to sketch San from Princess Mononoke… so I did! I spent a few days filling up a page with little sketches of her, and I genuinely enjoyed each one of them. It was a good reminder that, in my sketchbook, the purpose is PLAY, not PERFECTION. 💛
