Pockets of CREATIVITY

how to make space for the things you love

We live in a very BUSY world. With everyone always go-go-going, we often feel like we don’t have enough time for the things we love like playing guitar, doodling in our sketchbook, or baking a pan of cookies.

Lately I’ve been thinking about the idea of pockets. No, not the kind that holds your keys or your wallet. One of the definitions of the word pocket is “a small patch of something.” What if we carved out small little pockets of time to fill with the beautiful things we love? Five minutes for a sketch? Running outside to a three-minute song? A few minutes to try a new snack? How much more joyful would we be if we made time for these small patches of something?

Y’all know I’ve been talking non-stop about NURTURING this year (and speaking of, the Nurture Workbook for Lost Creatives is now available in my shop here!) I’m always searching for new ways to nurture my own creative practice, and one of the ways I’ve been doing that this past week is by sketching in my books. I picked up “The Penderwicks” by Jeanne Birdsall (which is absolutely CHARMING, btw), and I couldn’t help but sketch some of the cozy little scenes, props, and characters inside it! To all the bibliophiles out there cringing and screaming “SACRILEGE!!!…. please don’t come for me…

These simple little sketches are the perfect pockets of creativity for me. They allow me to explore a story I love, use a medium I don’t normally reach for (colored pencils), and try something I’ve never done before. The sketches don’t have to be perfect; I just want to enjoy making them. A simple, imperfect pocket of creativity.

So this week, I want to encourage you to find your own pockets of joy. Whether that’s making music or art or baked treats or dancing, take five minutes to do something you LOVE.
