“Don’t make it harder than it needs to be.”
I heard this phrase A LOT growing up, mainly because I had the tendency to do just the opposite (and still do, if I’m honest.) If there was an award for getting in your own way, I’d have a trophy room FULL of them.
In last week’s newsletter, we chatted about how I FINALLY took the leap and acquired better photography and videography equipment. But we didn’t talk about the many months prior where I endlessly whined about how grainy my thumbnail photos were without good lighting, how my footage wasn’t up to the quality I aspired to, how my tripod kept breaking, etc. And you know what I did?
Absolutely nothing.
I got in my own way simply by refusing to make a change because staying right where I was felt easier. But the truth is, it’s not easy in the long run. When we stay stagnant, we make things infinitely harder than they need to be.
And we do this in SO MANY AREAS of our lives. Avoiding the hard conversation with a friend. Procrastinating on our next creative project because we don’t feel like our skill level is capable of it quite yet. Sitting on the same ol’ salary because we’re too afraid to ask for a raise.
I get it. Taking the next step feels scary. It feels risky. It feels hard. And the truth is, sometimes the step we take is the wrong one, and there’s a cost to it. But stagnancy ALWAYS has a cost. We have to choose our hard. The next step might be difficult, but I assure you stagnancy is far harder in the long run.
Purchasing my new equipment had a big price tag and a big learning curve. But you know what? I’m SO FREAKING EXCITED about the doors it could open. I’m EXCITED to shoot thumbnail photos. I’m EXCITED to edit videos. Making this decision wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth it.

Where are you getting in your own way? What is the next step YOU need to take? If you want to share with me, feel free to hit the reply button! I’d love to walk through it together. :)
