We all have pivotal moments in our lives, and those moments can range everywhere from “magnifying glass” small to “herd of mammoths” big. But whether the moment pivots your entire life or a micro part of it, there’s no denying that these moments invite change.

This piece was a pivotal moment for me.

It was the moment I truly decided to make whatever art I wanted to make. To let go of the idea of every piece fitting into a rendering style or every piece having a similar color palette or every piece having similar vibes. I had a story I wanted to tell, and I was going to tell it whether it fit with my other artwork or not.

While this piece is a bit of an outlier amongst my illustrations, it’s a piece I use as a North Star. Whenever I try to fit myself into an artistic box, I look back at this piece and remind myself that creativity is not about having recognizable work and a cohesive style. It’s about enjoying the process and making what you want to make.

If you’ve been noodling around with an “off-the-wall” idea, unsure whether or not to bring it to life, let me encourage you to DO IT. Make the thing! Don’t worry about style. Don’t worry what anyone else will think of it. You need to make the art that’s on your heart, (cheesy, but true 😉), and it might just be a pivotal piece for you…
