4 Artists You Need to See
+ why they inspire me
I think it’s pretty safe to say I’m obsessed with art.
What a shock, I know! Biggest secret revealed! 😂 All jokes aside, I could spend hours and hours simply looking at other artists work (and I do, sometimes… curse you, Pinterest…) My tastes in art are all over the place, and every artist I love is so wildly and wonderfully different. So, today, I want to share with you four artists that inspire me!
1. Sue Rahel. This lovely artist’s work is the absolute embodiment of the word COZY. Every piece makes you feel good and see the beauty in the world around you. There’s also a sense of encouragement in her pieces. Like no matter how bad things are in the world or how chaotic your day was, you can still see beauty in it. I also love her sense of exploration in her creative practice! From gouache to colored pencils to stamp-carving, her creativity knows no bounds.

2. Robert Kondo. This absolute MASTER of light and color creates the most tangible illustrations. They have that “walk right in and touch the world” kind of feeling to them. There’s a hint of wistfulness in his pieces, too, because the colors and lighting are always just a step beyond what’s true to life. They’re just a bit more.

3. SchmoeDraws. Has there ever been an artist with pieces more playful than hers?! Her characters are so dynamic and full of life! Her “messy” sketches are such a beautiful reminder to me that art isn’t about perfectly clean lines or getting things “right” on the first try. It’s about finding joy in the process and evoking a feeling with your work.

4. Justin Donaldson. I could simply say “gouache boss” and leave it at that, but let’s dive a little deeper. His work is such a beautiful example of the versatility of gouache. From loose, alive washes of color to thick, sturdy brushstrokes, every piece is full of everything the medium has to offer. And not only does he create absolutely INCREDIBLE gouache illustrations, but he’s an amazing teacher, too! It took everything in me not to jump right into his new gouache class (y’all, my schedule is TOO FULL for a class right now 😅)

Anyhoo, I hope these artists gave you a bit of inspiration today, too. If you’d like to share some of your favorite artists with me, feel free to reply to this email!
